This page is intended to help those that do not have the means to take care of their pets because they have fallen on hard times, etc. The Outer Banks Veterinary Hospital DOES NOT bill clients for services or products. Payment is due at the time services and/or products are rendered. However, we understand that sometimes life is not ‘cookie cutter’ simple and good pet owners are forced to make hard decisions about the care for their pets. Below is a list of some of the animal rescue groups on the Outer Banks that offer financial assistance in some way or another. We highly recommend 2 things.
(1) If you truly can’t afford basic care for your pet because you are on a fixed income, etc. and are forced to subject your pet to a life below a basic level of needs (food, shelter, basic vaccines, etc.) on an ongoing basis, then you should consider not owning a pet. I know this is a strong statement but it really may be in the best interest of your pet to find another home. As a clarification, this is not referring to people that have fallen on hard times because of a loss of job, etc. but for people who do not and will not have the financial means or desire to take care of a pet during it’s lifetime.
In my experience, most people who ‘cannot afford’ care for their pets actually do not give their pets financial priority or they are trying to care for too many pets, not that they CAN’T afford the care. If you are smoking 4 cartons a month, cutting back to 2 cartons per month can pay for your pet to have the best health care available! Statistics show that the average person pays more for potato chips in a year than they do for their pets!
2) If you have fallen on hard times and a non-profit organization helps you to financially afford better care for your pet, please have the courtesy to return the favor when you are doing better money-wise.
